Electrical safety at the workplace: What are you required to do?

The maze of rules and rules about companies can be dazzled in the best of times, but the last thing you want to do is break a rule thats easy to introduce. Whether you are a new business owner or head of an established company with new equipment, electrical safety at the workplace is a requirement that can easily be met.

While the law does not require electrical testing, it is required that your electrical equipment is always safe.

Electricity will always find the easiest way to the ground. Any errors or weaknesses in your electrical installation or portable devices may become undiscovered. If another error develops, this can lead to serious risks of fire, electrocution or death. For example, a 13amp ring head without earth continuity can make any metal parts of devices connected to the LIVE if an object on the ring has developed a ground fault.

1989 entered into force the Work Regulations on Electricity in the Workplace, which clarifies the need to maintain electrical systems safely. Regulations require that all power tools and equipment used by construction workers must be safe to use and that all power tools hired to end users must be safe to use. At the workplace, the regulations state that employers take measures to limit the risk of damage to electricity and electricity, which includes both electrical installations and electrical equipment.

These regulations apply to most electrical appliances consumer, commercial and industrial operating between 50 volts and 1000 volts AC or between 75 volts and 1500 volts DC.

The only way to make sure you get a safe workplace and to make sure you can back up your hard work if things go wrong is that regular electrical testing is carried out on all electrical equipment in your workplace. This will correctly identify errors, their placements and usually the recommended solution.

To an increasing extent insurers insist that inspection and testing are carried out on a regular basis. If you suffer from an unfortunate accident, you are legally guilty of having committed a crime. Insurers do not pay a fine or compensation due to a crime

Compared to the hassle and possible costs of developing a problem, it is easy and usually quite affordable to test your installations and appliances.

IEE recommends that electrical installations be tested every ten years for domestic, 5 years for commercial or 3 years for industrial. Depending on the risk assessment for a particular item, portable device testing should be performed every three months. Highrisk items include equipment and workshop equipment, often involved in heavy workload under difficult conditions, and much more likely to develop a shortterm error than office equipment.

Worries about power outages and work disturbances can be alleviated, as electrical tests rarely cause such delays. A short power outage can be expected on each circuit in the system when the test is performed, but since most of the testing is performed while the system is still live, these interruptions can be planned around your daily activities.

When selecting an electrical testing or other contractor to perform your tests, make sure they load with a circle number and not floor space which does not matter how much circles there are or may not be in square feet. Make sure you get accurate and comprehensive reports and paperwork for your reports, to provide you with ample documentation for your efforts.

It is also a good idea to look for a company that holds certificates from UKAS United Kingdom Accreditation Service, so that they are accredited with appropriate qualifications and standards for the job.

Finding such a qualified professional to carry out your electrical testing meets all statutory requirements in your workplace and covers you and your employees for the future in the eyes of the team of course, it is necessary to address any corrective work requirements identified by testing.
